The assessment depends on the assignment.

Customer research, partner evaluation and operating reviews use different information. These examples show how the scope changes with the commercial need.

A new market

Can the business reach and serve the intended buyers?

Information
Target customer groups, product or service requirements, existing sales material and any market or partner research already completed.
Examination
Examine the buying process, supplier requirements, competing alternatives and channel options. Record which findings are supported and which still need to be tested.
Output
An assessment of the target market, the route to customers and the local activities the entry would require.

A potential partner

What would each party contribute to the business?

Information
The proposed role, candidate information, commercial discussions and the responsibilities your business expects to retain.
Examination
Compare candidates against the required capabilities. Examine customer coverage, operating responsibilities, dependencies and the terms that need further investigation.
Output
Evaluation criteria, a comparison of available candidates and a description of the responsibilities the partnership would need to cover.

An existing operation

Where do regional and local responsibilities overlap?

Information
Organization structure, operating measures, cost information and examples of work passing between the center and country operations.
Examination
Follow the relevant commercial and operating activities. Examine where authority, resources or service capacity fail to match the responsibilities assigned.
Output
Proposed responsibilities, operating changes and transition dependencies for the agreed part of the business.

Agreeing the scope

What happens before work begins?

The proposed scope identifies the markets or business activities covered, the available information, deliverables, responsibilities, timing and terms. Gaps in information are recorded so that the limits of the assessment remain visible.

Does partner work include legal advice?

The practice assesses commercial contributions and operating responsibilities. Qualified local advisers should address legal structure, licensing, tax and the enforceability of any agreement.

Can the scope include an existing plan?

An assessment can start with research, an entry plan or partner discussions already in progress. Share what has been prepared and identify the parts you want examined.
